I just returned from a camping trip with eight friends, and I see why many
people don't understand how truly awesome owning a digital camera can be.
On our recent trip, at least half of us had digital cameras. We all took
photos. The basic understanding in our group is that we post all of our
pictures to Ofoto.com so that anyone can order prints of any picture, no
matter who took it. It's great to be able to look through everyone's photos
and see their view of the trip. When I posted my photos, I received several
comments about how nice they looked... "So bright and sharp! So colorful!
We ordered a beautiful 8.5 x 11 print!" My friends' photos, on the other
hand, tended to look rather gray and dull.
I was not surprised by the quality of prints from my digital camera, but
it's not because my digital camera is the best of the bunch (which, ahem,
it is). There were plenty of great cameras along for the trip. The reason
my photos made better prints is that I enhanced them with SureThing Photo
and did some touchup work before I posted them. A little touchup goes a
long way. Consider this example:
The photo on the left is untouched. It's slightly washed out, probably due
to over-exposure by the camera's auto-exposure, exacerbated by the overall
grayness of the rainy day light. The result is typical of how most cameras
would expose the shot.
The photo on the right is the result of two quick steps in SureThing Photo.
1. I used SureThing Photo's Quick Fix feature to fix exposure.
2. I sharpened it using SureThing Photo's sharpening tool.
Total time for said touchup work, about 20 seconds.
The fact is, most pictures from digital cameras need a little touching up.
It's very similar to what the print machine operator would do if you took
your film to a photo lab. Many 1-hr photo labs have printers that analyze
your photos and make exposure adjustments to print them for best results.
And that's what you can do when you run your digital photos through SureThing
Photo.
I went through all 115 photos from our camping trip, which took about half
an hour. 90% of the photos needed at least a little bit of exposure adjustment
and sharpening. The results I got when I spent just 30 minutes in SureThing
Photo make me proud to be a photographer. I love taking pictures, and I
love sharing them with my friends and family. Now if I could just get more
time off to go camping!
