Pete's Corner

Since the only thing I love is my work, I've asked Ben, our SureThing CD Labeler product manager, to write this month's Pete's Valentine's Day Corner. It's a pretty good read. I actually learned a lot from it:

Feb '03

Valentine's Day for Dummies (er, Guys)

Yes February is coming, and that means Valentines Day, and there is nothing you can do to stop it. Simply stated this dreaded greeting card company holiday is the industry's way of capitalizing on men (and their weaknesses). Take a look at the numbers, really! Diamond earrings that cost... who knows what? Yeah, right. $120 dollars for a dozen roses that only weeks ago cost $12 bucks!? Can you say Capitalism? $50 bucks on a box of designer chocolates that will only serve to increase girth. I don't think so.

For those of us with an apparent lack of February funding, there are other ways to impress, and actually give something that will make her think of you with fondness weeks later, maybe even months if the relationship lasts that long. The following is my scientifically tested and verified advice. Here’s what you need to do to have a successful Valentines day:

1. Food.

2. A Flower (note: not flowers, but a flower)

3. Something that won’t die in a week.

That's it. No more. No less. So let's discuss these necessities in more detail...

The Food
Dinner IS important, so just make reservations at the nicest place in your price range. Yes, this is the most expensive part of the plan. But, food is never really cheap, and you were going to have to eat anyway. The important thing to keep in mind here is that Valentines Day dinner needs to happen on Valentines Day, so make reservations as soon as possible. Two weeks to a month in advance is about right.

The Floral Arrangement
You don’t need anything more than one rose. Really, anything more than one rose just says, "I would like to purchase your love this evening." It doesn’t even need to be long stemmed (just don't pick one from a neighbor's rosebush). Give it to her at dinner. It simply serves as something that she can carry around all evening, and show to everyone that she got a flower. 'Nuf said.

The Gift
Make her a compilation CD! It’s SO easy to do, and you know you can think of 7 or 8 songs that you can put on a CD. This gift will pay off in spades, especially if she likes all the songs, and wants to play the CD over and over on her way to work. Believe me, the CDs I’ve made for my girl have kept me in good graces through every one of my major faults. Late for a date? "Oh I was just trying to finish up this CD I made for you!" Messing around on the computer too long? "Oh I was just trying to finish up this CD I made for you!"

The idea is to make it songs about love, or at least songs that make her think of you, or maybe songs that make you think of her. Try to stay away from Van Halen’s "Drop Dead Legs" and stuff like that (it didn’t work the last time I tried it). Maybe stick to love songs or songs SHE likes.

You should NOT, however, hand her a CD with a silver face and "Love Songs" scribbled on it with a Sharpie. This shows no effort. Women like effort. Your effort. Make a nice label. Startup SureThing CD Labeler, scan in a few pictures of you and her together, set them on a black background, or use one of the Sunset or Rose pictures already in the software. Get the titles into the design, and you’re good to go.

Thanks, Ben! (I owe you one...)

Now just look at those two. So happy, so loving... Gotta tip my hat here, 'cause the guy knows what he's talking about. I would have given her a toy from a happy meal, a personal check for $10 (with "I love you" in the memo field), and probably a CD with Van Halen, Judas Priest, the Ramones... shows what I know about women!

I've also created a Freeburn CD for the occasion. Click here to check it out.
