1. Image Resolution: Use no more than is necessary
In a general sense, there is almost never a need for image resolutions
higher than 200 dots per inch (dpi) for scanned images you intend to print
on color inkjet printers. For all practical purposes, you're probably
not going to notice an improvement above 150 dpi. Keeping your image resolution
down will allow the printer to print faster and require less system resources
as well. Many people do not realize that higher resolution images will
only slow down the spooling process as the printer driver discards unused
information (and for, say, a 300dpi image, your printer is going to discard
roughly half of it, but it's going to take a long time for the printer
driver to determine which pixels it can get rid of).
2. Backgrounds: To use or not to use?
Suprisingly, you can create a professional and good-looking label without
using a background image at all. This will allow you to print faster and
save ink. It takes some experimentation and creativity to come up with
simple designs, but if print speed is important, simplicity has its benefits.
3. Disabling the 'clipping' feature
The 'clipping' feature in SureThing tells the printer to print according
to the label size. This is best displayed with a CD label and how it prints
in a circular format. This process can sometimes slow down the printer
spooler/driver.
To do this, choose the File > Print command. Select the 'Advanced'
button from Additional Options and uncheck the 'Clip graphics and text
to label boundaries' box, then click OK and continue to print.
4. Printer driver settings
By adjusting the settings in the printer driver software, you can optimize
the printer to print faster and more efficiently.
- Set the Print Quality to 'Draft' or in some printers like the Epson
select 'Speed' from the Mode field.
- Print directly to the printer. With this print option, you will not
be able to perform any other tasks on the computer because it uses all
the system's resources to process the requested print job, but can be
considerably faster overall. The other configuration is to select 'Start
printing after first page is spooled' which will use less hard drive
space and reduce the total print time.
5. Updating your printer driver
Check on the printer manufacturer's web site for the latest printer driver
software to download and install. It often takes a couple of versions
before all of the bugs in a particular driver are resolved. This can often
speed up your printing and will prevent any unwanted crashes, etc.
